The Risk Society

The world we live in is increasingly a globlized world. It is shrinking into a global village. The security of human beings as individuals and as a species is deteriorating. In this context, students and teenagers are particular vulnerable as they are less able t cope up with the effects of terrorism. The theme of the essay is the increasing risks and insecurities of the present world and the effects it has on the school aged students. The essay also presents us with a sis-step strategic model which could be well used by the school counselors for enabling the students to cope with stresses and traumas of terrorism.

The essay is written for the purpose of addressing the psychological health of students at the onset of a terrorist attack or a disaster. But, it calls fro attention from parents and policy makers although the specific target group is school counselors. On the particular issue of integrating education and humanitarian law, the essay suggests that churches can play an active and leading role. Community services must also be aimed at promoting humanitarian attitudes which is vital in establishing global peace.

The article does not contradict the scripture as it only highlights the role of the church in educating the new generation with ideas of humanitarian goals. However, ministry must focus on seeking the participation and involvement of the whole community rather than just students in their advocacy of humanitarian ideals. The ministry must also attempt to extend the humanitarian education into activities related to humanitarian aid by mobilizing resources and personnel. Under the leadership of church, students could become an active force in the propagation of humane values such as compassion, sacrifice and empathy. Importantly, counselors too needs moral support and motivation from the ministry as they are dealing with such a complex matter.
